Coaching

Coaching in the workplace is gaining ground, but what exactly is coaching?

Coaching is a proven method for increasing individual performance. It is a training methodology which helps leaders become effective at achieving objectives, supporting their direct reports by effectual communication and providing guidance.

However, organizations are moving beyond the individual approach, to multiple coaching approaches that drive accountability, development, and performance at all levels.

Types of Coaching

Executive Coaching

Executive leadership coaching can effectively strengthen the performance of key leaders in any organisation. It can help them make significant transitions and change behaviours that hinder performance. This type of coaching usually begins with a matching process that ensures a good fit between the coach and the participant, which may include assessments and alignment meetings with key stakeholders. The coach works with the executive to facilitate the understanding and use if information from assessments, create and work through a development plan, and address specific business and interpersonal challenges. Executive coaches provide a personalised, supportive environment to foster new ways of thinking, acting, and influencing so as to achieve key business outcomes.

Integrated Coaching

The Integrated Coaching approach embeds coaching sessions into a broader leadership development program or initiative. It can strengthen and deepen the lessons learned in leadership training. While usually a shorter term engagement than executive coaching, this type of coaching can help ensure that leadership development learnings “stick.”

Team Coaching

Team coaching is applicable from the C-suite to front-line teams and is much needed as even high-performing individuals can sometimes struggle to work together effectively. Team coaching includes methodologies and formats, which may be structured and prescriptive, to foster healthy interactions and high performance. It may also include less scripted methods to help project teams interact more effectively or to facilitate a process that evolves in unplanned ways. A coach may also observe a team in its normal work environment and provide inputs based on those observations. Learn more about the dynamics of team coaching.

Virtual Coaching

Virtual coaching is now very common in the workplace. With organizations becoming more global, virtual meetings became more prevalent, and virtual coaching was on the rise. All types of coaching in the workplace — executive, integrated, and team coaching — can be delivered virtually. Virtual coaching is suitable for teams that span countries and time zones, as well as for those interested in a coaching arrangement they can easily integrate into their hectic schedules. It uses video to help the coach engage and facilitate in the same manner they would in a face-to-face setting. The coach matching process is not limited to geographic and travel constraints, which often increases compatibility and flexibility.

Life Coaching

Life coaching involves a firm understanding of the principles of success and their application. Life coaches help they clients put these principles into practice, for success in their career or personal life. Life coaches can help clients deal with stress and anxiety, as when facing a financial crisis or making the transition to a new job, helping them identify the industry where they can prosper by matching it with their purpose in life.

Youth Coaching

Youth coaching encourages the personal development of young people and provides guidance for their future. It helps them cope with the expectations they have for themselves, the pressures of fitting in, growing up and planning a future. It can help young people develop life skills, build confidence, set and achieve goals, manage stress and deal with difficult issues A youth coach is not a substitute for parents, teachers or friends. Instead, they are there to offer youth an impartial, non-judgmental, trustworthy support, and the chance to vent freely and confidentially about anything that may be on their mind.
